The Platforms of Social Media and Purpose of Each Part 1

It’s no secret that marketing has completely changed over the last few years. With the launch of the Internet has come a digital revolution with new and innovative ways to market your business. From email marketing to CRM and Social Media, the options are endless. It’s important to always remember that other types of marketing can still be beneficial for businesses. Retailers receive a huge ROI on printed catalogues that they mail out. Sometimes customers prefer print vs. digital. It really depends on the type of business you are and what your goal is. Regardless, it is important for business owners today to stay afloat and understand the marketing options they have.

Society today is not quite as it used to be. The younger generation is glued to their hand held devices and don’t seem to remember a time when Social Media and cellphones didn’t exist. Social Media isn’t only for personal use anymore. It is now a crucial part of today’s new wave of marketing. Nowadays it is just as important as having a website. There are many different platforms but only a few meant for businesses. As it stands today, the main ones are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Tumblr and YouTube.

Facebook is one of the biggest online social networking services (as of today). Users create personal profiles, which house pictures and information about themselves. In addition to the personal profiles, each user has a feed of information on the home page entitled “newsfeed.”  This is where stories and information about the users “friends” will appear. Facebook is a place to see pictures and information about your friends. It’s not necessarily a place to sell your brand and product, although brands have a huge opportunity here to do just that. With millions of people sitting on their Facebook’s everyday, why wouldn’t you use it for your business? The results in terms of conversion have been endless with brands pushing traffic and making sales all through social media. Facebook is a great place to convert your fans into prospective customers. As long and you’re authentic, use the right content and don’t post a blatant product promotion each time, Facebook can really work to your advantage. It’s all about figuring out an algorithm of when your users will be online and most engaged and post content that speaks to them.

Instagram is a photo/video sharing network that allows users to take photos and videos, apply filters to them and share them on other platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. It is not a place to sell or convert since you can’t post clickable links. This platform should tell a visual story about your brand.

Twitter is a social networking service that allows users to send and read 140 character messages called “tweets”. Twitter has a much shorter shelf life then Facebook due to the way the “feed” rolls out, therefore should be used to transmit the most current information. It is an “information network” that connects the users to the latest information.
